Commission of Jimmy Page with Les Paul

So, yesterday was a struggle trying to complete anything of substance. I kept going back and forth like a crazy person. I did get some work in on my current piece and I also have a terrible rough draft for a statement of purpose. I am happy I got some things on my list done, though. Also, since I needed to gather images in my list of things to accomplish I thought I would post the next work.

Another commission piece I completed this year is Jimmy Page with his Les Paul. This guy was a pain in my side. I have to say I am not huge fan of painting guitars. It took me a while to complete this work. Not only because of the detail, but I just couldn't motivate myself some days. I also have to work which always slows me down. I feel non art related work sucks the motivation of painting away. I go to work with a plan in my head saying, "when I get home I'm going to paint." Then I get home, change into my comfy painting clothes, and sit for a sec. The sitting for second turns into hours sometimes. I don't know how that happens but it does. I hope I'm not the only one with this problem. Any who, I digress, back to Jimmy. It took me about two and a half months to complete but I did it! Now y'all get to see the process. Have a good Friday.

Commission(boy)

Merp! It's Saturday and it's going to be a long work day. I don't think I remember signing up for 12 hour shifts. Oh well, I'll just tell myself I get more money(not much haha), even though I'd rather not stand another 4 hours. I will be positive today. Send me good vibes.

Any who, back to today's post. So, The work I am going to post today is a commission piece completed this year. It was a difficult piece to work on for me because the subject passed away at the age of four. I didn't know him, but I couldn't help but think about someone so young being gone. It really is hard to wrap ones mind around such tragic events. My heart breaks for those who lose babies. No one should have to endure the loss of child.

With this work, I really wanted to get the personality of his face he expresses in the picture. I really hope I accomplished my intention for the work. I did get good feedback from the family. So that is all I could ask for when completing something so personal to the recipient.

Nightlights

Hello all on this cool November Monday here in Fort Worth, Texas. Hope you are all having a good start to the week. It's been kind of a rough day for me. I've had this unpleasant pain in my neck/upper back the past couple of days, making it nearly impossible to paint. This morning was about the same. I tried to make a doctors appointment, but unfortunately, they didn't call back. It might have been too late, but tomorrow morning it will happen! So, I just got some meds from the store for the time being. It seems to be helping alleviate a lot of the discomfort to be able to function. All I could think of is how uncomfortable I felt and it was driving me crazy!! Since I'm feeling somewhat better, I thought I would be productive while being up haha.

This post is for a small work from my duck series. This little guy is a picture of nightlight one of my best friends gave me. She knows my affinity for rubber ducks. When I decided to make this piece, I wanted to use tissue to see how light would shine through when adhering it to a wood frame. I applied coats of medium to help strengthen the tissue as a support for the painting. I taped and sealed off a 1&1/2inch boarder over the front and then painted the image. In one of the pictures you can see where I added the light to illuminate the background. Nightlight of a nightlight was the main objective and also, just for a fun experiment.

Ballerina

I'm back to make another post, and can hopefully get some much needed painting in today as well. This weekend will be sucked up by work events unfortunately. I also need to get things ready to apply for grad school. It's going to slap me in my face before I know it.

Any who, today's post is focused on the commission I completed last November. The subject matter is based on a ballerina in grand jete. I was able to see some of Degas' ballerina paintings/sketches while creating this piece. My job had some of his works in our exhibitions at the time. Sometimes it's nice to be surrounded by art. Being able to see others work helps with the process of how I will go about my own work.

Once I knew had free range of how I could display the work, I knew I wanted to paint within layers of medium. I'm pretty sure there are six layers adhered together after the entire process was complete. I sketched the image out and transferred it onto one of the layers and then added colors to the others. I'm always trying to explore the way things work within the layers of medium. It can be difficult to see how the end result will be because of the murky drying process. I have to be sure I'm done and everything is in the right place before I commit to adhering layers together. My favorite part about creating these works is you slowly get to see the small details come through as it clears.

I hope you can see the depth of the work through the pictures.

Laundry Hamper

Well today's post is not a painting but a project I worked on while painting. I thought I would show y'all the hamper I created for my bathroom. I had been wanting to make my own hamper for a while and finally got around to doing it last year.

I didn't really care for the wicker or metal lined hampers I had seen while perusing store aisles. I wanted something simple and something I knew I would like. So I repurposed the wood I had used for supports on old paintings and leftover wood I had accumulated during school. I sanded them down, I created the design for the top, used a bluish black color for the final version of the text, and sealed it with a waterproof varnish.
